• A high level of motivation for intensive study and hard practice.
  • A willingness to engage with musical topics that go beyond the guitar.
  • Performance experience and, if applicable, competition experience.

Entrance requirements for the continuing education master’s degree program in Guitar are:

  • Proof of a bachelor’s degree in guitar or an equivalent degree from a university in Germany or abroad;
  • Proof of the required artistic aptitude for the master’s degree program in Guitar at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz as part of an aptitude assessment;
  • At least one year of professional experience following the completion of the qualifying degree.

If you do not yet have a bachelor’s degree.

Furthermore, passing an aptitude test is a prerequisite for admission to the program of study. The aptitude test can only be taken upon request. The application must be received by the Mainz School of Music by November 1 for the summer semester and by April 1 for the winter semester.

If you have not earned your university entrance qualification (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung, HZB) at a German institution or do not have a university degree with German as the language of instruction, you must submit proof of sufficient German language proficiency (B1-CEFR level). You can provide proof of sufficient German language proficiency either by submitting corresponding examination certificates or by participating in a conversation with the teacher of your major subject as part of the aptitude test.

Good to know: The legally binding basis for selection, admission and enrollment is the text of the entrance requirements as specified in Section 2 of the currently valid examination regulations and, where applicable, in the appendix.

Throughout your entire degree program, you will study guitar as your major and focus on the practice of interpretation.

In addition to your major subject’s lessons, chamber music with guitar, interpretation practice, and performance class are core components of your degree program. Students are also required to participate in concerts presented by the department.

You will complete the degree program with a final practical-artistic exam.

The Master of Music in Guitar prepares you for a career as a soloist and chamber musician. In this degree program, you will acquire and further develop the necessary professional knowledge and skills:

  • The ability to cope with stressful situations and gain mastery of them
  • Development and design of concert programs featuring solo and chamber music performances
