- The motivation to look at the world through the lens of human, cultural, and media geography
- An interest in combining theoretical discourse and empirical research
- Proof of a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent degree from a university in Germany or abroad:
aa) in Geography/Human Geography with at least 130 credit points in geography modules, or
bb) in Geography with a focus on Physical Geography or, if less than 130 credit points have been earned, in geography modules or in a social or cultural science subject relevant to geography.
In the case referred to in paragraph bb), the examination committee will decide whether the course is relevant to geography. If a student has obtained a degree as defined in paragraph bb), enrolment may be granted on the condition that they earn up to 30 additional course and examination credit points, or read English literature from the bachelor’s degree programme in Geography. The examination committee determines the modules in which these credits must be earned; these credits are not part of the master’s examination. If the requirement is not met within the first year of study, it is generally not possible to continue. You will not be able to re-register for the following semester. - Proof of required English language proficiency in the form of

If the above-mentioned test certificate is not available at the time of application, admission may be granted conditionally, pending submission of the certificate and test result by the end of the semester in which the degree programme starts. If proof is not provided within the deadline or the test result does not meet the requirements, admission will be revoked.

Areas of specialisation
In addition to some compulsory courses, you can set your own focus by choosing from a variety of course options. As part of your studies, you will have the opportunity to design and conduct your own empirical research project during a research stay (field trip).
In your third semester, you have the option to study abroad or study at another German university, or to complete an internship programme.
Stays abroad
Would you like to live abroad for a semester or a year? Do you want to learn another language and get to know a new culture? Or gain a different perspective on your particular subject? A stay abroad provides you with the perfect opportunity to achieve this and is possible with every degree program – either self-organized or by taking advantage of one of the popular exchange programs. This is made possible by various cooperation agreements and partnerships with foreign universities.
For more information on this topic, please visit our websites on studying abroad. Visit our student exchange platform for an overview of cooperating universities in your field.
This program of study does not require you to spend time abroad, but you nevertheless have the opportunity to do so.
Studying abroad will help you broaden your geographic knowledge. During your semester abroad, you can consolidate your studies, gain insight into other academic cultures, and expand your social and cultural skills.
Internships
The third semester is the perfect time for students to complete an internship.
This program of study does not include a mandatory internship. However, voluntary internships are a great way to gain insight into a professional field.
An internship allows you to discover whether everyday life in a particular occupation suits your career expectations and interests. You can gain qualifications for a professional field and acquire important professional and personal skills to start a career. An internship helps you both shape your career path, and mold the remainder of your course sequence – in particular by selecting specializations that suit your practical experience.
You can find further information and relevant internships on the Career Service website.
Enrolment at JGU/RMU
Enrolment at JGU/RMU (Rhine-Main Universities alliance) allows you to take courses unrelated to the subject of geography. This gives you the opportunity to expand your own study-related interests or to broaden your knowledge of interdisciplinary and associated methodologies.
As a graduate of a master’s programme in Human Geography, a wide range of employment opportunities and career fields is available to you. Here are a few examples, but please note that there are many more possibilities:
- Journalism
- Public relations
- Communication
- Business development
- Media production
- Municipal authorities
- Consulting
- Marketing
- Digital agencies
- Political and government institutions
- NGOs
- Research/academic career
Not sure what to do after graduation? Don’t worry!
A university degree generally does not prepare you for a single profession but qualifies you for a wide range of career paths – for example, in research, in a typical profession related to your field of study, or in one of many other academic fields.
This is why career orientation is also part of your studies. Gaining practical experience is key, and you can do so through internships, working student positions, part-time jobs or voluntary work, for example.
JGU’s Career Service will support you throughout the entire process with information, advice, workshops and numerous events – from career orientation and working on your profile and skills to finding your dream job and successfully applying for it.
