As the AVP program of study has practical and creative elements, it is helpful to have a general interest in camera technology and editing programs, and possibly in writing websites. You should also have a general interest in journalistic work and the various media genres.
Some of the specialist literature and film content is in English. You should be proficient enough in English in order to be able to watch, read, and understand this material.
You will study this subject as part of a two-subject bachelor’s degree program. The degree program always consists of an academic major and minor, which can be combined according to your interests or professional goals.
If you choose the subject as a minor, you will generally complete only a portion of the modules and classes taught to students of the major subject. As a result, you will focus on a selection from the content listed below.
Program structure and subject-specializations
Audiovisual Publishing can only be studied as a minor.
The first two semesters form the foundation of your studies as you will acquire the fundamental theoretical, methodical, and practical knowledge. You will receive a practical and theoretical overview of all areas of journalistic film, television, and online production, as well as analytical methods. You can choose one of the following practical specializations as early as the second semester:
- Outdoor production (camera, sound, light)
- Studio production (editing, sound mixing), or
- Interactive media (web design, design, and programming languages)
By selecting your specialization early on, you will have many options for planning your studies and will be able to gain important experience within your specialization throughout the remainder of your studies. Starting from the third semester, you will expand your theoretical knowledge in two of the following required elective areas:
- Communication studies
- Film studies
- Documentary film production
- Scientific journalism
In addition to the theoretical part of the program, the practical journalistic work at the Campus Media training newsrooms forms the core element of the program from the third to the sixth semester. When producing audiovisual content under editing guidelines, you’ll apply the knowledge from your area of focus and develop your own items as an author. You can choose to focus on the following areas:
- Magazine content
- Reportage
- Talk shows
- Social media
- Documentary work
- Scientific journalism
- Project laboratory
In workshops, you will acquire a deeper understanding of the journalistic craft and develop skills such as researching your content, conducting interviews, and critically classifying audiovisual moving images.
In the fifth and sixth semester, you will take seminars on innovation in audiovisual production as well as on strengthening your communication skills. You will also supervise students in their first and second semester during their practical exercises.
Stays abroad
Would you like to live abroad for a semester or a year? Do you want to learn another language and get to know a new culture? Or gain a different perspective on your particular subject? A stay abroad provides you with the perfect opportunity to achieve this and is possible with every degree program – either self-organized or by taking advantage of one of the popular exchange programs. This is made possible by various cooperation agreements and partnerships with foreign universities.
For more information on this topic, please visit our websites on studying abroad. Visit our student exchange platform for an overview of cooperating universities in your field.
This program of study does not require you to spend time abroad, but you nevertheless have the opportunity to do so.
The School of Journalism, for example, offers you the opportunity to study abroad in the Department of Journalism at the University of Memphis as part of a cooperation between the DAAD and ZDF.
It is not recommended to take part in a semester abroad before the third semester.
Internships
This program of study does not include a mandatory internship. However, voluntary internships are a great way to gain insight into a professional field.
An internship allows you to discover whether everyday life in a particular occupation suits your career expectations and interests. You can gain qualifications for a professional field and acquire important professional and personal skills to start a career. An internship helps you both shape your career path, and mold the remainder of your course sequence – in particular by selecting specializations that suit your practical experience.
You can find further information and relevant internships on the Career Service website.
In order for you to best apply the relevant knowledge and skills that you have acquired in your studies, an internship should not be completed before the third academic semester.
As a graduate with an AVP minor, you will be able to produce media content independently and responsibly. You will have learned how to handle high-quality production technology (camera and editing) and critically classify audiovisual moving images. The fundamental knowledge and underlying methods of journalistic work will help you to plan and create content.
You can deploy this knowledge in the following related areas:
- Traditional work in audiovisual journalism (editing at television stations, freelance work)
- Film and television production
- Education and culture (e.g., private and public educational institutions, adult education, libraries, archives, documentaries)
Depending on the major and practical area of focus, other areas of work will also open up for B.A. graduates of this minor.
Nowadays, media literacy is an integral part of many jobs and, therefore, also a significant advantage for students who do not want to work directly in media-related professions. Depending on your major, you will be fully equipped and prepared for all types of communication in your future career.
Not sure what to do after graduation? Don’t worry!
A university degree generally does not prepare you for a single profession but qualifies you for a wide range of career paths – for example, in research, in a typical profession related to your field of study, or in one of many other academic fields.
This is why career orientation is also part of your studies. Gaining practical experience is key, and you can do so through internships, working student positions, part-time jobs or voluntary work, for example.
JGU’s Career Service will support you throughout the entire process with information, advice, workshops and numerous events – from career orientation and working on your profile and skills to finding your dream job and successfully applying for it.
