You should be interested in numbers, data, and algorithms, and in learning how to make well-founded, fact-based decisions.

You should be curious about how businesses can improve and set themselves apart from their competitors using artificial intelligence and machine learning. However, you should also value the importance of ethical and environmental topics.

Additionally, if you enjoy working in a team, communicating, and finding solutions with others, you are well-suited for this program of study.

Fundamentals of economics

In the courses focused on economics, you will gain knowledge in both economics and business administration. You will also focus on strategic decision-making and operations management, two key application areas of business studies. In addition, you will choose courses from the field of business administration focused on cost accounting, fundamentals of financial accounting, or fundamentals of finance, and acquire knowledge of financing and accounting. These topics offer plenty of scenarios for implementing machine learning processes and prepare for the digitalization and automation of management processes.

Computer science and business information systems

The courses under this heading teach IT skills with a focus on data science, data analytics, and machine learning. In addition to receiving in-depth programming training, you will also learn about big data, data mining, and data visualization.

Mathematical and methodical fundamentals

Mathematical and methodical fundamentals are essential for working with data and algorithms. During your studies, you will acquire the necessary skills in mathematics, data analysis, statistics, and empirical economic research.

Focus on sustainability and ethics

The focus on sustainability and ethics is a special focus area for all students in this degree program. The courses in this section teach you how to use modern technology in the areas of economic growth and global warming, practical philosophy/ethics, sustainable products and consumption, environmental economics, economic ethics, or through the Zukunftsmodul.

Required elective modules for setting an individual focus

In addition to taking courses in the required areas, you can choose from a wide range of required elective modules and decide what to specialize in. Specialization modules are offered in the areas accounting and finance, management, sustainability and ethics, business information systems, computer science, and in a free section which allows you to acquire interdisciplinary skills.

The program of study concludes with an academic bachelor’s thesis and a colloquium. In the bachelor’s thesis, you will focus on a practical or theoretical question from the field of business information systems and then present and defend your findings in the subsequent colloquium.

Stays abroad

Would you like to live abroad for a semester or a year? Do you want to learn another language and get to know a new culture? Or gain a different perspective on your particular subject? A stay abroad provides you with the perfect opportunity to achieve this and is possible with every degree program – either self-organized or by taking advantage of one of the popular exchange programs. This is made possible by various cooperation agreements and partnerships with foreign universities.

For more information on this topic, please visit our websites on studying abroad. Visit our student exchange platform for an overview of cooperating universities in your field.

This program of study does not require you to spend time abroad, but you nevertheless have the opportunity to do so.

We recommend going abroad in the 5th semester.

Internships

This program of study does not include a mandatory internship. However, voluntary internships are a great way to gain insight into a professional field.

An internship allows you to discover whether everyday life in a particular occupation suits your career expectations and interests. You can gain qualifications for a professional field and acquire important professional and personal skills to start a career. An internship helps you both shape your career path, and mold the remainder of your course sequence – in particular by selecting specializations that suit your practical experience.

You can find further information and relevant internships on the Career Service website.

We recommend completing an internship in the 5th semester.

As a graduate with a specialization in data science and machine learning, you are in high demand now and will continue to be in the future. You are an expert when it comes to automating or digitalizing processes in businesses. Your expertise is also needed when data-driven decisions must be made faster, or with a more efficient use of resources, or better tailored to the individual customer.

Typical professions for graduates of the Business Informatics program include working as a data scientist, data analyst, and data engineer.

In addition, all areas of business in which processes need to be optimized, sales increased, or manual activities digitalized are open to you. These include procurement, sales, human resources, marketing, controlling, accounting, finance, production, logistics, and IT.

Besides working within a company, you can also work in consulting, helping multiple businesses improve their operations.

Not sure what to do after graduation? Don’t worry!

A university degree generally does not prepare you for a single profession but qualifies you for a wide range of career paths – for example, in research, in a typical profession related to your field of study, or in one of many other academic fields.

This is why career orientation is also part of your studies. Gaining practical experience is key, and you can do so through internships, working student positions, part-time jobs or voluntary work, for example.

JGU’s Career Service will support you throughout the entire process with information, advice, workshops and numerous events – from career orientation and working on your profile and skills to finding your dream job and successfully applying for it.
