Attending a language course or summer school is an ideal opportunity to discover another country for a few weeks, while learning a new language or improving your existing knowledge of specific subjects. Connect with people from all over the world and experience the culture of your host country firsthand.
You can also obtain language and attendance certificates, which may be useful for job applications or even required for certain professions. Taking language courses abroad not only broadens your personal horizons, it can also boost your CV and improve your career prospects.
So take the plunge and embark on an adventure!
The best place to learn a language is where it is spoken. But before you start, you need to decide what kind of language course you want to take. With seemingly endless choices, there is bound to be the perfect option for everyone.
You can…
- take a stand-alone language course abroad to get to know the culture, people, and language. The course is designed for learning language or improving language proficiency and providing cultural education.
- take a language course to prepare for studying or doing an internship abroad. During the course, you will acquire the language skills you need for a future stay abroad.
The great wide world is at your fingertips, now you just have to figure out where to go. Think about what language you want to learn or improve. Where do people speak this language?
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) provides extensive information about the opportunities available to you abroad on its website.
Some of JGU’s partner universities offer special language courses for students in Asia (Korea and Japan). If you are interested in these, please contact us to find out more!
Of course, taking a language course abroad also involves costs. But that should not stop you from embarking on this adventure. You can apply for scholarships and financial aid – we will be happy to advise you on this subject and help you find the right financial assistance to make your dream of going abroad come true.
Students and doctoral candidates who are taking a non-English language course abroad can apply for funding through PROMOS. The “Programme to Increase the Mobility of Students from German Universities” supports scholarship holders in the form of a partial scholarship that covers the costs for mobility. In addition, a flat-rate course fee of €500 per person and funding measure is provided. Funding is available for language courses with a duration of 3 weeks to 6 months.
Applications are open to enrolled doctoral candidates and JGU students in their second or later academic semester who would like to complete an (intensive) language course at a university abroad with at least 25 hours of instruction per week. Previous knowledge of the language of the course is an advantage, but not required. Funding can only be provided if the German Federal Foreign Office has not issued a travel warning for the respective region.
You can find out the exact amount of PROMOS funding here:
Please note the following application deadlines when planning your language course and applying for a PROMOS scholarship:

Students and doctoral candidates who complete a specialized course abroad can apply for a PROMOS scholarship (link in German). The “Programme to Increase the Mobility of Students from German Universities” supports scholarship holders in the form of a partial scholarship that covers the costs for mobility. In addition, a flat-rate course fee of €500 per person and funding measure is provided. Funding is available for specialized courses up to a maximum of 6 weeks.

PROMOS scholarships can be granted in addition to AuslandsBAföG and the Deutschlandstipendium. Persons with a degree of disability (GdB) of at least 50 or a chronic illness who are receiving funding as part of the PROMOS project can apply for a supplementary allowance.
A supplementary allowance of at most €10,000 can be granted for a period of up to six months to cover the additional expenses (including expenses for a caregiver or chaperone). For stays lasting longer than six months, or when extending an ongoing stay abroad beyond six months, you can submit a new supplementary allowance application. To assess the additional expenses (such as expenses to travel abroad, local transportation at your destination, accommodation abroad, medical care, special teaching materials, etc.), the expenses for persons without disabilities or chronic illnesses are compared with the expenses for persons with disabilities or chronic illnesses. These costs may only be claimed if they are not being covered by any other entity.
The PROMOS staff at the International Office submits the application for a supplementary allowance to the DAAD at least two months prior to the start of your planned stay abroad. Applications for a supplementary allowance cannot be submitted if your stay abroad has already begun. It is therefore important that you obtain the necessary documents well in advance and contact the PROMOS office at an early stage.
Your application must include the following documents:
- Rejection of cost coverage by your health insurance provider or supplementary insurance provider
- A copy of your ID card for the severely disabled
- For persons with a chronic illness: A medical certificate describing your medical requirements
- Additional documents to demonstrate the necessity and appropriateness of the increased expenses

Funding is provided for 75% of the verified costs, up to a maximum of €1,000. The funding is provided by Santander Universities and allocated by the International Office.
Please submit the following documents:
- Letter of motivation for your planned stay abroad
- including a statement explaining the added value and necessity of the stay abroad for your education or research project
- specifying and justifying your destination country and destination institution, as well as the type of intended stay
- specifying the desired period of the stay
- Proof of registration/enrollment as a doctoral candidate at JGU or an enrollment certificate as a student at JGU.
- Proof of the costs for the stay in the form of invoices and/or verifiable proof of payment
