When looking at the period from the antiquity to the modern era, no other empire lastest as long. During its largest expansion, the Byzantine Empire encompassed the entire Mediterranean region; from Southern Spain in the West to Syria in the East; from the Baltics in the North to Northern Africa in the South. The Byzantine Empire  played a major role in the emergence of modern Europe and the Middle East. First, the roots of christianization can be traced back to Byzantium. And second, when considering the entire course of its existence, Byzantium is considered to be the most significant and influential leading culture, which set standards in all areas of life and shaped its neighboring counties. Byzantium also build a bridge between the antiquity and the modern era, and simultaneously, from Europe to the East.\" data-info-popup-headline=\"The Eastern Roman or Byzantine Empire \" class=\"jgu-with-info-popup\">Byzantine period<\/a> in their entirety and learn to analyze and classify them in terms of art and cultural history. The topics of study are extremely diverse and include constructions, sculptures, toreutics, paintings and mosaic art, illuminated manuscripts, iconography and goldsmith\u2019s art, as well as inscriptions, tools, and all everyday objects. These works provide a rich supply of objects of study, which are archaeologically dated as well as analyzed and classified in terms of art and cultural history.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph {\"className\":\"has-big-font-size\"} -->\n<p class=\"has-big-font-size\">Due to the fact that this era is strongly characterized by the development and expansion of Christianity, a <strong>key focus is placed on all of the Christian legacies of this time period<\/strong>. This includes churches and monasteries with their unique architecture and murals, sacred and liturgical objects, and illustrated religious books. To fulfill this research, diverse archaeological research methods are used, such as various forms and techniques of excavation or work in archives, museums, and libraries. Furthermore, you will also learn how to carefully date, classify, conserve, archive, and document findings. The research methods applied by the department depend on the object at hand and encompass both modern, scientific methods (chemical analyses, geophysical investigations, microscopy, C-14, x-rays, ultrasound, thermoluminescence, etc.) as well as the \u201cclassical\u201d methods used in archaeology and art history, such as excavation techniques, building surveys, iconography, stylistic analysis, and the analysis of the relationship between text and image.
