Students of Ancient Near Eastern Studies are enthusiastic about early societies and excited about working with ancient languages, writings, and material legacies. They love visits to museums and exhibitions and are prepared to make the journey to the Near East to visit monuments and excavation sites. Curiosity and openness to ideas and achievements beyond Europe\u2019s borders are just as important as a spirit of adventure and stamina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Very good German and English skills (ideally also basic reading skills in French) are important for writing, reading, and presenting during your studies, as the academic community in these subjects is relatively small but active worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/jgu-base-accordionitem>\n\n\n \n\n

This subject is a subject of specialization in the ALPHA<\/a> (B.A.) degree program<\/strong>. You can also study this subject as a minor<\/strong> within the two-subject bachelor’s degree program<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Introductory phase<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You will learn a first cuneiform language, Babylonian (the generic term being Akkadian), as well as the fundamentals of the material culture of the Near East. This will provide you with broad knowledge and allows you to set your own priorities as you progress through your studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Specialization phase & individual paths<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Based on the fundamentals of the subject, your studies will then take you on an individual path. You will learn about the latest processing methods and achieve a new degree of digital literacy. Depending on your interests, you can focus on the following topics:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
