A second degree is the completion of a second undergraduate degree program after you have already earned a first degree. First degrees include bachelor\u2019s degrees, Diplom<\/i>, Magister<\/i>, and state examinations from universities or universities of applied sciences, as well as bachelor\u2019s degrees from accredited vocational academies and dual higher education institutions. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/jgu-base-section>\n\n\n

You are studying for a second degree if you enroll in another degree program on the same degree level <\/strong>after completing your first degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A master\u2019s degree program builds on a bachelor\u2019s degree program. So if you choose a master\u2019s degree program after completing your undergraduate studies (e.g., a bachelor\u2019s degree), this does not<\/strong> count as studying for a second degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, if you start another undergraduate<\/strong> degree program after completing your first undergraduate<\/strong> degree program \u2013 for instance, if you wish to earn a second bachelor\u2019s degree after having already earned a bachelor\u2019s degree, this is considered studying for a second degree. If you have already completed a master\u2019s degree and would like to complete another<\/strong> master\u2019s degree, this is considered a postgraduate degree (Aufbaustudium)<\/i> <\/p>\n\n\n\n \n<\/jgu-base-buttonitem>\n\n<\/jgu-base-button>\n\n\n

3% of the spots in selective degree programs are allocated to applicants who want to pursue a second degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are considered an applicant for a second degree if the degree certificate for your first degree was issued by the application deadline. If your certificate was issued after the application deadline, you are applying to a first degree program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \n<\/jgu-base-alertbox>\n\n\n

If you completed your first degree at a university abroad, you are considered an applicant for a first degree.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you would like to enroll in a selective degree program to earn a second degree, you must include the reasons why a second degree is necessary for you<\/strong> in your application. This explanation and the grade you earned in your first degree are key to determining whether or not you receive a spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We allocate spots to students pursuing a second degree in selective degree programs based on index numbers. The higher the index number, the better your chance of receiving a spot. Half of the index number is comprised of the points you receive for the grade you earned for your degree, and the other half is comprised of the points you receive for the reasons you gave for pursuing a second degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When pursuing a second degree, you must apply to the degree program on the correct application portal<\/strong> by the deadline<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \n\n \n\n

For a second degree in degree programs with nationwide admission restrictions (Medicine, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Dentistry), apply on hochschulstart.de<\/a> (in German).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Winter semester application deadline<\/strong>
May 31 for those who graduated with an \u201cAbitur<\/i>\u201d in a previous year,
otherwise July 15<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Summer semester application deadline<\/strong>
January 15<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a second degree in all other degree programs (except for Pharmaceutical Sciences, Medicine, and Dentistry), apply on our online application portal JOGU-StINe<\/a> or via hochschulstart.de, if your degree program is part of the DoS process.<\/a> Please note that applications for advanced semesters are only possible via JOGU-StINe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
