The university entrance qualification is a certificate which gives you the right to enroll at a university. In addition to the German Abitur, there are other kinds of university entrance qualifications which allow you to enroll at JGU. Find out here what these include and what you have to pay attention to.

A general university entrance qualification allows you to apply for a program of study in all undergraduate degree programs (bachelor’s, state examination, Diplom).

The following serve as general university entrance qualifications:

  • German Abitur or certificate of general university entrance qualification (allgemeine Hochschulreife)
  • completed course of study at an institution of higher education (including universities of applied sciences)
  • proof of a vocational qualification which leads to a general university entrance qualification, i.e. a master craftsman’s diploma (Meisterprüfung) or an equivalent qualification
  • certificate of recognition confirming your general university entrance qualification if you have international school or university diplomas

You can also study at JGU with a subject-based university entrance qualification. However, in this case you can only apply for degree programs whose subject relates to the subject on which your university entrance qualification is based. Your diploma or certificate will include the relevant information.

For degree programs in the Bachelor of Education, the subject your university entrance qualification is for must correspond with one of your two teachings subjects; for two-subject bachelor’s degree programs, it must correspond with your major subject.

The following serve to document your subject-based university entrance qualification:

  • subject-based entrance qualification for higher education
  • subject-based university entrance qualification for applicants with a vocational qualification
  • success in a related degree program for applicants transferring from another higher education institution (minimum number of credits achieved within the minimum time period)
  • certificate of recognition confirming your direct subject-based university entrance qualification if you have international school or university diplomas

If you have a vocational qualification, you may be able to receive a university entrance qualification under certain circumstances even if you do not have an Abitur certificate. You can find out how that works and what you need to pay attention to on our website for applicants with a vocational qualification.

If you have previously studied at a German university in a bachelor’s or master’s program and would like to transfer to JGU, then you have a subject-based university entrance qualification if you have

  • earned at least 40 credits and
  • studied for at least two semesters.

If you have previously studied at a German university of applied sciences in a bachelor’s or master’s program and would like to transfer to JGU, you have a subject-based university qualification if you have

  • earned at least 90 credits.

If you have previously studied at a German university or university of applied sciences in a state examination, diploma, or master’s program, you have a subject-based university entrance qualification if you have

  • passed the intermediate examination.

You can apply for degree programs in Art and Music at JGU with a qualified secondary school certificate (qualifizierter Sekundarabschluss I, Abschluss der Mittleren Reife) if you can demonstrate your particular aptitude for the program of study in the aptitude test.

If you have earned at least 13 points in the aptitude test for your major subject, you can apply for the following Bachelor of Music programs:

  • Jazz and Pop Music
  • Piano and Orchestral Instruments
  • Church Music
  • Opera and Concert

You can apply for the Liberal Fine Arts Diplom degree program if you pass the aptitude test for Art with the result “particular aptitude” (“besondere Eignung”).
