Please observe the following guidelines when applying for recognition of your educational qualifications from one of the following countries. The deciding factor is where you completed your educational qualifications; your nationality is not a factor here.
In addition to a secondary school leaving certificate, you generally must also submit your university entrance examination (e.g., ATAR). Further information can be found in the anabin database.
Proof of the duration of study in conjunction with a certificate confirming the completion of secondary school education acquired in 2015 or later (after the 11th school year)
The duration of study must have been completed at a state or state-recognized private university in Azerbaijan.
Proof of the duration of study in conjunction with a certificate confirming the completion of secondary school education acquired in 2015 or later (after the 11th school year)
The duration of study must have been completed at a state or state-recognized private university in Belarus.
The process of recognition for Chinese applicants can only be carried out at JGU if the certificate or attestation from the Academic Examination Center (Akademische Prüfstelle, APS) has been received by the German Embassy in Beijing. This document does not replace Chinese school and university certificates and their official translations.
If you have taken the assessment test at a Studienkolleg in the Federal Republic of Germany, you do not need to submit the APS certificate. In this case, please upload your certificate from the assessment test along with your application.
If you find on anabin that your university or college only has Chinese accreditation, the documents must be checked on a case-by-case basis. In this case, we may also have to request additional documents. Please note that this could extend the processing time.
Doctoral degrees
For the recognition of international educational qualification certificates or when applying for a doctorate program at JGU Mainz, you must submit a bachelor’s/master’s degree certificate with a transcript of records indicating subjects and grades for all bachelor’s/master’s years of study.
Doctoral candidates are exempt from submitting the APS certificate. Please include confirmation of your acceptance as a doctoral candidate when submitting your application for the certificate of recognition.
The process of recognition for Indian applicants can only be carried out if the certificate or attestation from the Academic Examination Center (Akademische Prüfstelle, APS) has been received by the German Embassy in New Delhi as a digitally verifiable document (original PDF). This document does not replace Indian school and university certificates and their official translations.
If you have taken the assessment test at a Studienkolleg in the Federal Republic of Germany, you do not need to submit the APS certificate. In this case, please upload your certificate from the assessment test along with your application.
Doctoral degrees

Graduates of an advanced secondary school up to and including the 2019/2020 school year
In addition to your diploma certificate from an advanced secondary school or an Islamic secondary school, you must also submit your state secondary school leaving examination “Ujian Nasional” (SCHUN).
Graduates of an advanced secondary school after the 2019/20 school year
In addition to your diploma certificate from an advanced secondary school or an Islamic secondary school, you may also submit the state university entrance examination “Ujian Tulis Berbaris Komputer – Seleksi Nasional Berdasarkan Tes” (UTBK-SNBT).
If you are an IB/GIB graduate, you must submit your transcript of records from the final two school years (term reports/semester reports) in addition to the certificate issued by the IB organization. These must show the level at which the six IB subjects were taken during the two-year IB program.
If you have not yet been issued an official IB diploma at the time of application, the official transcript of grades issued by the IBO office in Cardiff, UK, can be submitted as a substitute for recognition.
Graduates with secondary school leaving certificates that were acquired by 2018 (after 11 school years)
Completion of the pre-university course in 2011 and after: You must submit your degree certificate from a three-year Iranian secondary school along with the degree certificate from a one-year pre-university course. Your secondary school degree certificate must reflect an overall grade of at least 15.
Graduates with a second secondary school leaving certificate that was acquired after 2018 (after 12 school years): You must submit your degree certificate from the second level of Iranian secondary school.
School certificates from 2015 up to and including 2018
To be able to grant you a certificate of recognition, we additionally require personal files from your school (licnoe delo ucascegosja) that serve as proof that you have completed the full 11 school years. A certificate from the issuing school concerning the school period is not sufficient!
Proof of the duration of study in conjunction with the secondary education certificate
The duration of study must have been completed at a state or state-recognized private university in Kyrgyzstan.
Applicants from Morocco must make sure that proof of all periods of study at Moroccan universities and other educational institutions are submitted. The certificates must indicate whether the periods of study were successfully completed (via the submission of a transcript of records / relevé de notes).
The copies of the certificates must be complete, meaning that both the front and back pages must be submitted.
The conversion of a Dutch grade into a German grade is generally based on a 6 being the lowest grade. Where universities use decimal grades up to 5.5 as the lowest passing grade, this must be certified by the Dutch university.
Program of study
The diploma certificates and transcripts of the completed degree programs certified by the Higher Education Commission Pakistan (HEC Pakistan) are always required for a final verification of certificates issued by Pakistani universities.
The copies of the certificates must be complete, meaning that both the front and back pages must be submitted along with the confirmation from the HEC.
Please note that as of the application procedure for the 2021/22 winter semester, a change in the evaluation of school leaving certificates from the Palestinian Territories applies. In Germany, the Certificate of General Secondary Education opens up the possibility of subject-based university admission after passing the assessment test, but no longer enables direct university admission. Detailed information on the assessment of your Certificate of General Secondary Education can be found in the online database of the Central Office for Foreign Education.
A certificate of recognition issued by JGU prior to March 2021 is no longer valid and cannot be used when applying for a program of study at JGU. Please submit a new application for the certificate of recognition.
For school certificates acquired in 2005 and later
In addition to your certificate of eligibility for university entrance (Swiadectwo dojrzalosci), you must also submit your degree certificate (Swiadectwo ukonczenia).
Proof of the duration of study in conjunction with the secondary education certificate
The duration of study must have been completed at a state or state-recognized private university in Russia. Records of study must indicate the form of study (direct/distance learning or evening program).
Status of the universities
Information on the status of the universities (state, state-recognized private university) can be found at anabin. If the university you attended is marked on this website as an “accredited private higher education institution” and has the status “H+/-,” then the accreditation of the subject studied (subject-specific accreditation by the responsible ministry) must be submitted.
The accreditation certificate must clearly indicate the level at which the subject studied is accredited. If only ranges of accreditation levels (e.g., Level II to IV) are indicated, a corresponding attachment with the subject codes and the accreditation levels to which the codes are assigned must be submitted in addition to the accreditation certificate. The attachment must therefore state whether the subject you are studying is accredited at Level II, III or IV.
Proof of the duration of study in conjunction with the (general) secondary education certificate
The duration of study must have been completed at a state or state-recognized private university in Tajikistan.
Secondary school leaving certificate
Applicants from Turkey must submit the results of their university entrance examination (code card) in addition to their school leaving certificates.
Those who took the exam in 2007 or later must submit an internet printout of their ÖSYS card.
Examination for international students at individual universities in Turkey
Applicants with Turkish certificates whose permanent residence is outside of Turkey may take a university entrance examination for internationals at universities in Turkey. A university entrance qualification can only be awarded upon enrollment or once a request for enrollment in an official four-year Lisans degree program has been received.
Proof of the duration of study in conjunction with the secondary education certificate
The duration of study must have been completed at a state or state-recognized private university in Turkmenistan.
Proof of duration of study in conjunction with the general secondary education certificate
The duration of study must have been completed at a state or state-recognized private university in Ukraine.
Applicants who have completed a university degree in England, Wales, Northern Ireland or Scotland must submit proof of the qualification level (EQF or SCQF) of their degree together with proof of the academic degree obtained. If this is not issued in the transcript of records indicating subjects and grades (e.g., diploma supplement), a separate certificate must be submitted.
Proof of the duration of study in conjunction with the general secondary education certificate
The duration of study must have been completed at a state or state-recognized private university in Uzbekistan.
The process of recognition for Vietnamese applicants can only be carried out at JGU once the certificate or attestation from the Academic Examination Center (Akademische Prüfstelle, APS) has been received by the German Embassy in Hanoi. This certificate does not replace Vietnamese school and university certificates and their official translations.
If you have obtained the APS certificate by taking the TestAS, please also submit your TestAS results.
If you have taken the assessment test at a Studienkolleg in the Federal Republic of Germany, you do not need to submit the APS certificate. In this case, please upload your certificate from the assessment test along with your application.
