Do you want to study in Mainz long-term and earn a degree at JGU? First, check whether or not you have to apply as an international applicant. Even without German citizenship, you may not have to apply as an international applicant if one of the following applies to you:
- You are a citizen of one of the EU member states or EEA countries.
- You have a German Abitur or German university degree.
- You have a European Baccalaureate and your grade has been officially converted to the JGU system.
If you are applying with international certificates, you will require a certificate of recognition which confirms your university entrance qualification for JGU and includes a conversion of the grades you have earned into the system used at JGU.
Depending on the program you want to apply for, further formal requirements may apply. The individual degree descriptions offer information on what is needed.
If you do not yet meet all the requirements for your desired degree program, you may be able to acquire them at JGU. Our university hosts a preparatory German language course and a Studienkolleg to help you prepare for your studies.
If you require a visa for your stay in Germany, apply for one early at the German diplomatic mission in your home country.

A seemingly inconsequential change of subject can have major repercussions. If you change subjects, the conditions governing your residence permit may change and the duration of your stay for studying in Germany will need to be extended.
Are you already at least in your 3rd academic semester and have a student visa in Germany? Then please note the following:
- Obtain information from your foreigners’ registration office before changing subjects. In general, you can change your subject if credits you previously earned can be applied to your new subject and the length of time spent studying is not prolonged by more than the maximum amount of time granted on your residence permit.
- Make an appointment with the academic advisory office of your desired subject to get information about the content of the degree program, potential for recognition of your previous coursework and exams, the duration of studies, and potential professional fields after you complete your studies.
- Contact the Student Service Center with questions concerning application requirements or the online application.
- Contact the International Office with questions concerning visas and residence permits.
