Erasmus+ students (exchange program) and students who want to come to Mainz via a university partnership or a scholarship program (DAAD, Fulbright, Rotary, other) must submit an application with their home institution/funding provider and are then nominated at JGU. JGU will check and confirm the nomination. After that, you can submit an application to JGU.

Students who want to come to Mainz as free movers outside of existing agreements and partnerships must first go through a selection procedure. The responsible faculty will decide whether you will be accepted. If you are accepted, your home institution must confirm that the study abroad period can take place, only then will this form of nomination be confirmed. After that, you can submit an application to JGU.

If you are completing an internship at JGU, enrollment is not necessarily required. However, under certain conditions, depending on the duration and period of your internship, you may enroll as an exchange student and benefit from the advantages available to JGU students (Deutschland-Semesterticket, eligibility to rent a room in a student residence, networking with other students, etc.).

You must contact International Student Support at least 8 WEEKS BEFORE THE START of your stay at JGU so that we can assess whether and how enrollment may be possible in your specific case.
Unfortunately, we cannot process later or last-minute requests. Enrollment will then no longer be possible.

Once everything has been clarified, your home university and/or the receiving department at JGU must nominate you. After that, you can submit an application to JGU.

If you are planning a research stay at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, enrollment is not always required, but depending on the duration and timing of your stay, it may be advisable. As an exchange student, you are entitled to the same services and resources as regular students.

Please contact International Student Support at least eight weeks before your planned arrival to discuss your options. We cannot process short-notice requests, and enrollment is no longer possible after this deadline.
Before applying, you must find a JGU professor whose core research field aligns with yours and obtain their written confirmation that they will supervise your stay. Once you have received this confirmation, the JGU professor can nominate you directly, and you can submit your application.
