There are numerous dates and deadlines that you should know and observe before starting your studies, when applying for a place at the university, at the beginning of your studies, during your studies, and afterwards.

The application process for prospective students taking the early Abitur is paperless.
Documents must only be submitted upon admission.

Exception: If you are applying for a selective degree program and submit a special request, please submit a printout of the request with the relevant supporting documents.

Undergraduate degree programs

Online registration for participation in the lottery for admission to undergraduate degree programs is open from March 1 to March 31 for the summer semester and from September 1 to September 30 for the winter semester.


Master’s degree programs

Online registration for participation in the lottery for admission to master’s degree programs is open from February 1 to February 28 for the summer semester and from August 1 to August 31 for the winter semester.

The online application deadline for pre-university programs is the first day of lectures for each semester.

For students already enrolled at JGU:

  • for the winter semester – if possible, by July 15 (re-registration deadline), at the latest by the last business day before the start of the lecture period
  • for the summer semester – if possible, by January 15 (re-registration deadline), at the latest by the last business day before the start of the lecture period

For students not yet enrolled at JGU:

  • Anytime, no deadlines

The introductory week for first-year students as well as for students changing subjects or universities features both orientation events for individual subjects and interdisciplinary orientation events. It takes takes place in the week before the start of lectures in both the winter and summer semesters.

The deadline for applying for an academic leave of absence is typically the re-registration deadline. However, in exceptional cases requests may be submitted by the last calendar day prior to the start of the semester (March 31 or September 30). In the event of unforeseeable, prolonged illness that prevents you from conducting your normal studies, you can also apply for a leave of absence during the current semester.

Exmatriculation at the end of the summer semester: by September 30

Exmatriculation at the end of the winter semester: by March 31

Students may request exmatriculation with immediate effect during the current semester for a compelling reason (e.g., transfer to another university).
