The English-language M.Sc. program in Evolutionary Biology is a consecutive master’s program with a clear emphasis on research-oriented teaching. Each winter semester, up to 32 students are admitted. Admission requirements include a bachelor’s degree in Biology or another natural science. Selection is based on the bachelor’s GPA and an interview.

The program begins each winter semester with three compulsory modules taken by all students. Through these three modules, all students acquire methodological knowledge in areas such as theory, laboratory work, computer applications, as well as comprehensive knowledge in various aspects of modern evolutionary biology.

In the second semester, students choose three elective modules offered by different research groups. These modules cover topics such as general and theoretical evolutionary biology, biotic interactions, ecology and behavior, population biology, anthropology, genomics, or bioinformatics.

In the third semester, students undertake a project work corresponding to an extensive laboratory, theory, or computer course, which includes independently conducted scientific experiments. The data generated in this module are analyzed and documented in the subsequent master’s thesis module. At the end, a final examination is conducted.
