Musicology encompasses the study of music in the broadest possible sense and therefore spans from Greek antiquity to the symphonies of the 17th century all the way to computer-aided composition programs, and from the music of the Chinese Song dynasty to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s operas all the way to Raï. The Musicology degree program questions the historical, cultural, social, and aesthetic conditions of the phenomenon of music from historical, cultural, social, media-related, and scientific perspectives. The program of study therefore intends to convey basic musicological knowledge and the ability to think, understand, and work independently within a musicological academic framework.

Musicology requires basic knowledge of harmonies (cadence and simple harmonies), ear training (recognizing successive and simultaneous intervals) and reading scores. The ability to play an instrument or multiple instruments is strongly recommended.

At our institute, you can study one of two degree programs: The degree program “Social and Cultural Anthropology” focuses on understanding cultural diversity, globalization, and different ways of life and relationships, as well as working out their similarities and differences. The Social and Cultural Anthropology program critically examines the cultural and social conditioning of European ways of life and thinking. “African Languages, Media and Communication” is a new collaborative degree program with the Goethe University Frankfurt and the only program of its kind in Germany. At the heart of the program is practical language training in at least one African language as well as fundamental linguistics.
